Filter Media
The proper pond filter media plays an important role in how well your filter performs and removes impurities from your pond. For biological filtration, ideally you want a filter material with an abundance of surface area for the beneficial bacteria to grow on which will help with filtering and removing organic wastes and even oxidizing ammonia. Bio balls are a great choice for this application, as well as the Nursery Pro BioBlox. If you are looking for help with mechancial filtration of waste and debris, look for a good filter pad. Filter pads help catch and trap debris prior to entering into the core of the filter which can then be manually removed or even broken down by bacteria. Finally, there are also pond filter media for chemical filtration like the use of activated carbon and zeolite to filter out chemicals and toxins in the water like ammonia, tannins and others. These are often placed in mesh bags and added to the inside of a filter so that water can pass over the bags and the impurities can by absorbed by the material.
