Projects From The Pond: Water and Algae Related Science Fair Ideas

Science fairs are events that are both fun and educational for children to participate in. Not only does the child have the opportunity to use their creativity, they are simultaneously learning about a particular aspect within the field of science. Although finding the right subject may be difficult at times, the ecosphere of a pond has a variety of aspects that children can use as project ideas.

“Food Chain of a Pond”

One idea for designing a project related to the food chain in a pond is to construct a food web. Make a display that shows the food cycle of a pond from living organisms to what they eat. The larger fish eat insects and other smaller fish, turtles eat almost anything and ducks eat algae and plankton. Ensure that the web includes all of the animals and plants that are found in a pond.

“Algae and Photosynthesis”

Photosynthesis is the process that plants use to produce sugar from carbon dioxide through the sun’s energy. One idea for creating a science project for photosynthesis is to show how plants are unable to produce food without sunlight. Obtain algae from a pond, scissors, paper clips and aluminum foil or cardboard as your materials. Use the cardboard or aluminum foil and cut them into a small enough squares, triangles and circles that will cover half of the algae. Paperclip each shape to a different piece of the algae and place all pieces in direct sunlight. After four days, remove the cardboard or aluminum foil and observe how the lack of sunlight had an affect on the algae.

“Create Your Own Ecosphere”

You can create your own ecosphere by building a pond out of a fish tank inside your home. As long as the tank is large enough to hold everything you need; this is typically two feet deep and between two to four feet wide. You can observe your koi pond after you have finished building it to see how the habitat of a pond works.

“Algae and Protozoa”

 

In order to identify the organisms in pond water, obtain actual pond water from your local science supply company or pond and bring to school. Use a dropper and place drops on a slide and investigate under a microscope in the classroom. Once you are able to locate each organism under low power, switch the microscope to high power to view the detailed organisms.

“Environment and Pollution”

One way to complete a science project that has to do with the environment and the pollution is to obtain a haze monitor. Use this haze monitor to measure the amount of smog that is in the air at certain locations throughout your area or at different times of the day. Create a poster with diagrams that show the change in smog levels throughout the day or throughout the different locations in your city.
